GEAO Workshops -
Business Skills for Enterprise Architects

Enterprise Architecture is about designing and building successful enterprises and therefore many business disciplines are involved in this field of expertise. The ultimate responsibility of the success of an enterprise lies with the CEO. Therefore, enterprise architecture, or better the architecture of the enterprise, is mainly a business discipline. The career path of most enterprise architects starts in the information technology (IT), which is also the origin of this relatively new profession. Today’s focus on business-IT alignment puts more and more pressure on enterprise architects to develop a strong awareness and understanding of the key business disciplines.

This workshop will give you an overview of the key disciplines that you need to be aware of as an enterprise architect. It covers, at executive level, subjects such as; organisational structure and diagnostics, politics, power, social networks, culture, business strategy, financial accounting, corporate finance. It will give you the fundamentals of business understanding and references on top of which you can continue to build future skills and knowledge.

To Change or not to Change?

"Change Initiatives.” “Transformation Programmes!” “Business Re-Structuring Projects.” “Re-Engineering.” There are many different labels for work activities which basically aim to achieve the same thing, namely to “operate in a more efficient way”. Typically people will immediately perceive this in terms of automation – the notion of simply dropping in some shiny new computer system which will remove the error-prone human from business processes and speed everything up! How often have you heard of, or indeed been involved in sorting out the mess left behind, a transformation programme which has sunk huge amounts of money over a number of years and yet completely missed the original aspirations of business change envisaged at the start of the programme?

Interview with George Brundage – Retired EA, Homeland Security US (Part II).

In our last interview with George Brundage we focussed on the need for the agency to prepare an integrated target-application plan that reflects what it is doing or may be expected to do in the future (see GEAO’s March/April Newsletter). In this article George Brundage gives his view on a variety of implementation topics and the challenges that Enterprise Architects face in a US Government environment.

What should I tell my CIO about Enterprise Architecture?

The government needs a group of experienced people, who can answer Enterprise Architecture questions. It might be called “EA Questions” or “What’s your EA Question?” If someone did this, it would be a real service. This article covers a typical conversation between an Enterprise Architect and a CIO.

The Architecture of the Enterprise – An Analyst View of your Company

A set of annual reports and accounts allow skilled analysts to get insight into a company’s operational and managerial strengths and weaknesses. As an Enterprise Architect involved in the business you should possess some of the same skills and understand the concepts and language of financial statements. This article covers a set of tools that analysts use to analyse a company.
